I can’t recall the last time I’ve visited a home that didn’t have a sitting area in the master bedroom. I know what you are thinking—not everyone is lucky enough to have extra space in their bedroom for purely sitting, but I beg to differ. It doesn’t take much to carve out a small space for sorting your thoughts, a place for meditation, or a simple spot for having a conversation. Here are five reasons why sitting areas could give you a jump on a good night’s sleep.
1. A beautiful sitting area is a place for reflection.
Did you know journaling before bed can help to ward off sleeplessness? Take a few minutes to list things, people, or experiences in which you are truly grateful. Having an attitude of gratitude helps you to reflect on the things that are going right in your life. When your mind is set on the positive, you reduce your stress and anxiety.
Choose you thoughts like you choose your clothes.
Although some of us aren’t exactly dressed to walk a runway everyday, the clothes you choose are comfortable, flattering to your body, or complement you in some way. Why should your thoughts be any less gratifying? Doing this will make it much harder for your brain to focus on the negative.
2. A beautiful sitting area gives you a mental vacation.
For one, I think we should all have a quiet space to unpack the thoughts from the day. Whether you have a demanding day job or if you need a mental break from your family’s busy schedule of activities. A sitting area gives you the space you need to decompress and prepare for one of the most important part of your day, restorative sleep.
3. A beautiful sitting area helps you to plan for the future.
As a part of my continuous self-help/self-discovery initiative, use my own sitting area to write on a note card the six most important task I need to accomplish for the next day. Doing this gives my brain permission to stop thinking out it. The thought now lives on my notecard and will not be forgotten. The next morning my priorities are already set. Even if it takes me half the day to do the item listed as #1. I know that I’ve accomplished what I deemed as the most important task for that day.
4. A beautiful sitting area is a visual escape from the everyday.
Do you make time for mediation? Yes, meditation. When was the last time you said, “woooo-saaahhh.”
Mediation technically is defined as a mental exercise where you spend time in contemplation or reflection. Meditation is also easier when you are engulfed by beautiful surroundings. Think about the aesthetics of a lovely day spa.
Don’t have the time? Friend, like everything else, you have to schedule the time and place like you do with work commitments. Furthermore, having a meditation area within your bedroom makes it all the more convenient, doesn’t it?
Above is my meditation room. It’s not in my bedroom but is across the hall from my bedroom. It is the room where I have my important conversations. This room is unlike any other room in my house or my office for that matter. The color alone makes it unique and those who engage in conversation with me while in this room know they have arrived in a special space.
5. A beautiful sitting area allows you to reserve your bed for sleep and intimacy.
If you think of your bed as place for restoration and satisfaction, you may be less likely to use it for work or watching television. Though some of you would argue that watching an episode of your favorite show is pretty darn satisfying, deep down inside I’m sure you’d agree.
I cannot stress enough the importance of sleep. It could mean the difference between operating a peak performance for an important meeting or having the patience to manage the temper tantrums of your kiddos. Try one of the above tips to help you prepare for one of the most important parts of your day, sleep!
