While everyone is going light and bright, we just can’t get enough of using rich color!
Have you admired dark, moody rooms in a magazine and want this look in your home? If the answer is yes, then look no further than this recent media room transformation. We enveloped the walls and trim with the most intriguing shade of blue, Tempe Star by Sherwin Williams. Some call it moody while others call it romantic, however, we simply call it fabulous. It comes to no surprise that a deep, adventurous blue would draw fame as the Color of the Year for the second consecutive year. It has mass appeal for its ability to transform a room into a cocoon of both comfort and warmth.
The Color Inspiration
This color was originally inspired by the fabric chosen for the custom Roman shades. It has a nomadic, worldly quality that transports you into an exotic rainforest. Every color in this pattern shows up somewhere in this space. When considering dark wall colors, think about how you plan to use the space. If you plan to spend evenings in the room, like this one, a dark color scheme works much better than one that’s light and bright. Moreover, if your room doesn’t get much light go ahead and make it cozy. A deep, sumptuous hue is the way to go. You won’t be disappointed.
Architectural Interest
In the before picture (above), you will notice the room was initial void of architectural detail except for the arched doorway. We brought in our carpenter to elevate the room even more with trim molding.
Designer Tip
If possible plan your art, accent lighting, and furniture placement prior to designing the millwork. We’d already selected the lion triptych and sconces and designed them to be centered on this wall. See how the trim work frames this area perfectly? This wasn’t by happenstance. It was all in the plan.

WE HAD OTHER IDEAS” color=”light” btn_label=”READ MORE” btn_link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Ferikaward.com%2Fpaint-wood-paneling%2F||target:%20_blank|”]Months before we started this project, we worked on design concepts for the upstairs library which boasts rich, wood-clad paneling. I’d considered painting the entire room, bookcases and all, the same color. It’s just so chic. However we went another direction which yielded equally fab results.[/us_cta]

Though the overall room is dark, the room’s existing carpet brings light back into the space along with the table and accessories. The durable, stone top cocktail table will serve this entertaining space well whether it’s filled with snacks and drinks or if someone decides to prop their feet on it.

Dinner and a Movie
Ditch the folding TV trays and create a zone for cinematic dining. Located behind the sectional, a highboy and a couple of bar chairs is all this space needed to create a dinner and movie experience. A stocked bar cart is within reach, too! No more missing “the good part” because you ran upstairs to mix a cocktail.
