MOTHER NATURE IS THE BEST DESIGNER which is why I always look to incorporate some element of natural materials–be it wood, stone, hides, or otherwise– into every one of my designs. Wood brings warmth into a lifeless space and complements any color in your decorating palette. You’re probably most familiar with pine, oak, or maple, but dare to venture into more exotic varieties such as zebrawood, African blackwood, box elder, or Brazilian rosewood. They tend to add a few dollar signs to the price tag, but their luster and rich appearance are unmatched.

What really tickles my fancy is when artisans use these materials to craft fashionable accessories like the tribal wood u-shaped necklace or the wooden handbag by Maryanne Minaudiere. Look forward to an upcoming interview with a wood handbag maker whose love for hardwoods helped to make a name for himself in both the home improvement industry and the fashion world.
