This week the industry’s world color authority, Pantone Institute, announced Ultra Violet as the 2018 Color of the Year. According to Pantone, Ultra Violet is a “provocative yet thoughtful” color and traditionally associated with both royalty and spirituality.
Pantone also believes this color symbolizes new possibilities and a hopeful future. Sounds promising.
How is the color of the year determined?
A group of color experts from around the globe gather to discuss color trends in food, fashion, pop-culture, design, technology, and even politics. However, I’m willing to bet that an astrologist must be in attendance also. Here’s why…
“Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now,” it reads. “The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.” – Pantone Institute
Unlike past color of the year winners here and here, it won’t take long before we see a wave of Ultraviolet accessories on the retail market. This shade of purple isn’t exactly “new” or currently hard to find. As for trade professionals, vendor showrooms will immerse us in a purple haze in upcoming January markets both in Atlanta and Las Vegas. However, you can get a jump on 2018’s trending shade with our hand-picked selections below.
