Apparently our nesting instincts are getting us prepared for what I consider the slumber months. We’ve yet to feel the fall crisp air here in Atlanta, however I’ve been working on a number of bedrooms that usher in cozy and comfort. This master bedroom was far from a retreat when I first saw it. It was no representation of the young, effervescent couple who slept there every night.
Fortunately it had great bones. Hefty moldings around doors, windows, and the ceiling were the room’s biggest assets. The abundance of windows was a close second.
This bedroom design was an anniversary gift to the lovely lady of the house so it was imperative that I captured her vision. We started with the inspiration image below. She instantly fell in love with the smoky blue walls, so that was our jumping off point. I generally don’t choose a paint color first, but I knew I could find fabrics that would shine against such a rich backdrop.
After shopping around a bit, here’s the fabric scheme I chose. Smoky blue mixed with oatmeal keeps the tone traditional, while the yellow geometric added a touch of playfulness.
Here is the final result. We used a total of eight drapery panels to soften the lines of the windows. They are unlined to provide a bit of light-filtering, but the upholstery weight fabric still provides a touch of privacy.
The throw pillows are a mix of custom and retail. Can you guess which of them are from HomeGoods? Of course you can’t! I love mixing high and low for a look that’s deceptively affordable!
And for the seating…
The homeowners had a pair of chairs in their playroom. They were hotel resort cast-offs purchased for $100 each. We outfitted the pair with newly upholstered cushions and put them to work in front of the bed.Lovely, right? Don’t overlook sturdy pieces of furniture in your home. They can always be remixed, repurposed, and reused! Just show them a little TLC. The photo frames are made of weathered wood and are the perfect start to a growing gallery wall. There’s a lot of love in this family and the couple enjoys being surrounded by sweet memories and those close to their heart.
