Instead of dreaming of a home away from home, why not make home your favorite place to be? As a self professed homebody, I’m obsessed with comfortable and beautiful living spaces—especially bedrooms.  After an exhausting day, I look forward to returning home and even more so to my bedroom. I’m sure my desires aren’t much different from yours. In fact, one of the most common questions I receive about living spaces is how to turn a master suite into a retreat. 

If your master bedroom looks like this…

…then here are a few words of advice to get you started:

COMMIT TO A COLOR:

There’s no surprise that color is always my first consideration when designing a restful space. Whether you know it or not, color greatly influences our mood and choosing the right color for your space is a great starting point.  I’ve worked with this client on several other projects—the dining room, living room, sunroom, and outdoor living room and all room have a neutral foundation with moments of color. 

Though the client has a love for neutral spaces, there is still a desire for color. However, what most people fail to realize is that when you use a specific color in abundance, it then becomes a neutral. After a brief interview on color we arrived at plum.

SELECT YOUR FABRIC(S):

When choosing fabrics for a design scheme my best advice is to pull fabrics featuring your preferred color, in this case plum, then throw other textiles into the mix and then begin to pull your favorites.  

The two fabrics pictured below made the cut, Duralee’s Dilemma in Plum for the standard pillow shams and Encore in Wisteria for the bedscarf. They boast various shades of plum and provided an opportunity for us to add gray to the color scheme.

 

CREATE ZONES:

If you are fortunate enough to have a large bedroom, then you can really have fun with this tip. Create two separate spaces, one exclusively for sleeping and the other for reading.

BEFORE

The sitting room features a trio of huge windows which I absolutely love. However, we needed custom window treatments to soften the lines of the window. With the rear of the home facing the trees, there currently isn’t much need for privacy. The two side chairs were brought upstairs from another room that was overcrowded with furniture. With two full sized chairs, there was still plenty of room for a luxurious velvety sofa, a cocktail table, and console table for books and sentimental items.

FILL YOUR SPACE WITH MEANING:

My client is an avid traveller and enjoys surrounding herself with images of places she’s visited. It only made sense to include framed photos of bridges in Italy to add a touch of romanticism.  

SHOP YOUR HOME:

Opposite the sofa is where the pair of chairs landed. Between the two chairs we hung a mirror that beautifully reflects the sunlight making the room even brighter. It also serves as a dressing mirror where the client can take a quick look before heading out.
