Your home should reflect the way you want to live. It’s a common belief shared by myself and my partners at Beazer Homes.
They’ve asked me to feature a project that helps our family function better and makes the best use of our space. The first area that came to mind was our mudroom. We weren’t fortunate enough to inherit a dedicated space when we bought our home, but with a little imagination I turned a forgotten corner into a highly functional hub.
Sandwiched between the garage, laundry room, and the kitchen is where the magic happens. This space just might get more traffic than an Atlanta freeway during rush hour. However everyone can quickly find what they need, grab it, and be on their way without a hassle.
The two walls in this corner measure just over 2 feet in width. It’s just enough space for our smallest kids to sit down and put on their shoes. As you can see, a family of seven won’t exactly leave behind their entire shoe wardrobe here but there’s enough space for each person to store a pair.
HOOKED ON STYLE
I picked up 4 fashion-forward two-tier hooks from a local discount store for $4 each. The lower hooks hold backpacks or totes, the upper hook can hold a jacket or coat.
Four cork squares combine to make a larger surface to post our monthly calendar, a few snapshots and their latest artwork. Our five kiddos crank out masterpieces like Baby Picassos. We can edit and display their favorites quickly with a few push pins. I’ve incorporated permanent framed artwork we purchased last year from the Dogwood Festival.
My Sweetie is tickled with the newly outfitted space and I’ve given him another reason to call me his hero. His poor wife will have some big shoes to fill. Bless her heart.
As it gets into the rainy season I may add a boot tray in the garage. If you do not have a garage, you could always use a boot tray in your space to protect your wood floors
If you’re building a home with Beazer, then I highly suggest you take advantage of their Choice Plans which allow you to choose from a selection of design and structural options for the secondary living spaces, like a mudroom, or a kitchen or bathroom at no extra cost.
Imagine, next to your new mudroom could be the handsome headquarters for your home based business just like in the photo above. Your options are endless.
How have you turned an awkward space in your home into a nifty nook?
