A young woman will live here soon.

This room is not a dorm room, but a living space on the campus of the United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH). Each night, a young woman will lie here contemplating her next move, praying for guidance, gaining hope for her future, and receiving restorative sleep.Erika_Ward_RoomServiceAtlanta_2013_before_2

After years of being in the foster care system, she’s naturally apprehensive about stepping out into the real world. Weren’t you? Therefore, when she came of age, she’s signed herself back over as a ward of the state and enrolled herself into the Independent Living Program (ILP) here at UMCH. Smart girl.

Erika_Ward_RoomServiceAtlanta_2013_beforeWhile living in this very space, she will learn how to cook meals to sustain herself and her future family, attend college, or perhaps learn a trade. In the future, she will recall her time here at UMCH and the people who loved her and steered her in the right direction.

I’ve committed myself to designing a healing place for this young woman whom I’ve never met and in my mind I think of her as a little sister.

She’s actually young enough to be my daughter. I would only hope that if my Ava was here someone would do the same for her.

There’s so much I want for this young woman’s life, but I will start where I can right here in this space.

What I do know for sure is that “for everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”

I’ve been given so much in my 33 years here on Earth and I’m not just speaking of material possessions. I have health, love, inner peace, self-confidence, family, a place to call home, an education, a successful design business, and a non-profit organization (Room Service Atlanta). It would be in vain for me to attempt to list all that I have. Without fail, I’d surely omit something…
Erika_Ward_RoomServiceAtlanta_2013_before_4 While I don’t take for granted that this space is both safe and clean, I know it can be so much better with your help.

Will you please provide a monetary donation to help me complete the work in this studio apartment? I’ve added a donation button below and on the sidebar of this blog where you can safely complete the transaction. I thank you in advance!

Please know that regardless of the size of the donation, big or small, it all helps. Every single penny donated will go into this space. Any extra will go towards other areas in the two cottages we are also currently working.

If you haven’t seen the work we did last fall, please take a moment to view the 2012 Room Service Atlanta video below. Some amazing transformations, physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally happened here all because of the generosity of others. Thanks for sharing your big heart!
