PROJECT:

Whether it is an e-design or full service project, it’s no secret that children’s spaces are my favorite rooms to design. With a little one of my own appearing any day now, I’ve been in nursery mode for quite some time. This particular project is also special to me because my client and I found out we were pregnant on the same day. Our due dates are 5 days apart!

She and her husband are repeat clients. I previously completed a full service design for both their family room and their master bedroom so I’m very familiar with their design aesthetic. For this project, my clients opted for an e-design they could complete at their own pace. This is a great money-saving option for those who enjoy the shopping experience and the process of building the room with professional guidance.

This nursery was created to grow with the child, the most common request I receive from clients. I also needed to create a gender neutral design that would work if later they decide to try again for a girl.

DESIGN TIP: When designing a unisex nursery, only allow the accessories to be gender specific. Therefore if next time a baby girl arrives, the room doesn’t have to receive a complete overall. Only a few accessories need to be added/and or subtracted.

INSPIRATION

The clients are avid travelers and wanted Baby Ascher’s nursery to reflect their penchant for adventure. The nursery has a subtle aviation theme in which the decor also serves as a memento. For example, the over-sized map will also document the places Baby Ascher will soon visit along with his parents. This is a great way to document the baby’s life as a junior explorer.

The airplane decals are the other accessory that gives clues to the aviation theme. Inexpensive and easy to apply, they reinforce the theme without a huge commitment.

WHAT I LOVE MOST

  • Baby Ascher’s crib is a sleek navy blue finish, a departure from the traditional white painted crib and finished wood varieties.
  • The zigzag rug will be great visual stimulation for Baby Ascher during tummy time and a zany imaginary roadway when he starts playing with toy cars as a toddler.
  • The floor space is free of cords. All lighting is either wall or ceiling mounted.
  • The daybed/sleeper is a comfortable accommodation for the parent on night duty…no awkward evenings sleeping in a rocker.
  • Lastly, the accent wall will boast a chevron paint treatment in khaki (the existing wall color) and Spicy Hue by Sherwin Williams. A paint application like this takes some patience, but definitely gives you lots of bang for your buck. Check out the progress picture they sent…

…I can’t wait to see the finished space!
