PROJECT:

In the midst of the Caribbean Sea on the island of St. Thomas, The Latch Patch lactation boutique is currently in the build-out phase and was in need of a stylish decor plan that appeals to the modern mom and baby.

INSPIRATION:

The owners wanted the lactation boutique to convey trust, relaxation, tranquility, professionalism. They described their style as eclectic, clean, and modern, and are color lovers. Open to color palette ideas, but one of the partner’s only request is that we accentuate with lavenders and purples. They hope to insert a bit of decor with multi-cultural influences.[divider_flat]

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED:

The color palette inspiration came from  the company’s logo. Each room in the boutique’s decor plan contains two or more colors within its rainbow spectrum.

The boutique’s floor plan is essentially a long rectangle with building entry at the north and south ends. The small waiting area measures only 7′ x 7′ and needs to accommodate both mothers and toddler aged children. A couple of comfortable, yet stylish wing chairs fit the bill for Moms, while kids can sit on fun, tufted floor cushions. If additional seating is needed, the metallic side table can also double as a stool.

Owners requested that the lounge / meeting room feel more like a living area than commercial space. The tangerine sofa and white leather accent chairs are both commercial pieces that will stand up to the high traffic, but the soft furnishing like the pillows and seagrass rug provide the comforts of home. The media center will house a television for video presentations and the closed storage areas will house stocked merchandise for sale.

The breastfeeding room is an intimate space that provides privacy for the new mother and her nursing infant. Here is where I included the emphasis on lavender. The chosen color palette and wall decor evokes a nurturing feeling and helps the mother to relax which in turn helps her have a better breastfeeding experience. [divider_flat]

WHAT I LOVED MOST:

  • As I designed this space I daydreamed of  the comfort my little one and I would experience breastfeeding near/on an exotic beach? I can feel the tranquil breezes now.
  • With three kids of my own, I took special care in designing a space in the reception area that would keep little ones occupied. The wall mounted book bin and chalkboard-painted knee wall will keep their attention until Mom’s visit is complete.
  • I gained a few new resources and learned about shipping products to island locales.
  • I demostrated to the client how to mix styles to achieve their new signature look.

I can’t wait to see the progress photos!

I really love it! Honestly, the pieces from the lactation room almost brought a tear to my eye especially the print that said “I love you more than you will ever know”. Great job… Oh! And I really liked the zebra rug also. It all pulls together so nicely!

  2. Coreen says:

I just wanted to say how happy and excited we are about executing this plan and seeing our visions interpreted through your spectacular design expertise. It felt like you were right here with us along the way. If there is anyone out there considering the service but is skeptical…..I have to say that we would definitely do it again, challenges and all! Thanks again, Erika….Coreen/Co owner, The Latch Patch
